Brad's Story
What are some struggles you've faced with your mental health?
I wouldn’t say it’s a personal struggle as it affected the whole world. But the Covid Pandemic and losing family members to it definitely took its toll on my wellbeing, not just mentally but physically too. It made me realise that I wasn’t really doing much with my spare time and I should be doing more not only to look after myself, but also the people around me – so I suppose although a struggle at the time, it was a blessing in disguise.
What do you do to keep you mental health in-check?
As of the last 4 years my absolute go to hobby has been hiking. I can’t begin to tell people how much just going out and being in nature away from the stresses of everyday life can improve your mental health. Being outside and active and doing things like this releases endorphins which can massively improve your mood – and I’ve definitely noticed this in myself.
What makes you feel most fulfilled?
Without a doubt there’s no better feeling for me than summiting a mountain. At the minute I’m on a mission to complete all 214 of the Lakeland Wainwrights – currently on 121 / 214 and already feeling a huge sense of accomplishment!
What is something you're looking forward to doing?
I have a few big plans for the future in regards to taking my hiking to the next step. It’s always nice to have a goal and something to work towards as I feel it keeps you motivated. I plan to climb Kilimanjaro before my 26th Birthday and I am also visiting South-East Asia and New Zealand in November for a few months! New Zealand has been on my bucket list for a long time so I can’t wait to see what it has to offer.
What advice would you give to someone struggling with their mental health?
Some advice I would give is speak to people. You don’t have to carry all of your problems by yourself and people are there to listen. My messages are always open for anybody who needs some advice or somebody to talk to. And going back to my previous point, GET OUTSIDE – it’s basically free and you’ll be surprised at how much of a difference it makes.
