Curtis' Story
What are some struggles you've faced with your mental health?
I struggled with self doubt, anxiety and separation anxiety - which, through spending more time outdoors, made me appreciate who I am and what I stand for. Self-reflection and being comfortable with your own company is important. Recently over a month period I lost my friend, my cousin and my brother was in a coma until very recently he woke up. This really knocked my mental health but through spending time in nature with my thoughts I was able to keep my head right. Nature really does heal.
What do you do to keep you mental health in-check?
A variety of things. I spend time alone to process thoughts and feelings and write them down to then read them back to process and understand. I spend a lot of time in the mountains, mainly on scrambles. Focusing on my breathing on the inclines in turn relieves the anxiety. This is because it keeps me focused on what I'm doing in the present moment. Nothing else matters other than what I'm doing right there and then. I also talk openly to friends and family about how I feel which is really important.
What makes you feel most fulfilled?
Being out in nature surrounded by like minded people. Climbing mountains. Walking through forests. Cold water therapy. Sunrise and sunsets. This all gives me life.
What is something you're looking forward to doing?
I look forward to every day. I'm aiming to get my mountain leader qualifications also and complete some mountain scrambles in North Wales.
What advice would you give to someone struggling with their mental health?
Find what brings you peace and quiet in your mind and embrace it. Use that as your focus. Do not hide from yourself. If there's one person you should be open and honest with it's yourself. Be comfortable in your own skin, be comfortable with your own company. There's so much support out there for mental health but that support starts with yourself.
