Dan's Story
What are some struggles you've faced with your mental health?
For eight years, I worked as a prison officer, a challenging role that took its toll on my mental health. After struggling for a while, I reached a breaking point. It was during a solo hiking trip that I began to reconnect with myself and rediscover a sense of peace. The time spent on the trails became a form of therapy, helping me heal and regain perspective. I still struggle with normal everyday life. Anxiety and depression play a huge part. I have flash backs of my time in the service.
What do you do to keep you mental health in-check?
I channel that healing energy into organizing group hikes, where I have the opportunity to meet new people and share the transformative power of nature with others. It’s become more than just a passion, it’s a way of giving back. This year, I also found incredible happiness when I met my amazing girlfriend, who has added a whole new layer of joy to my life. We thrive for adventure together and learn to grow as couples and individuals.
What makes you feel most fulfilled?
Embracing the unknown and stepping into what others might call “crazy” is what keeps my mind grounded. It’s in those moments of uncertainty and challenge that I feel most alive, pushing my limits, testing my strength, and discovering just how far I can truly go. It’s through these leaps that I find my clarity and sanity.
What is something you're looking forward to doing?
I’m on an exhilarating journey to become a mountain leader, with plans to eventually take on the role of a mountaineer! This New Year, I’m heading to Scotland for a week of intense mountaineering, and next year, I’ll be conquering the Swiss Alps! The adventure is just beginning, and I’m beyond excited to see where these peaks will take me!
