Dan's Story
What are some struggles you've faced with your mental health?
I’ve struggled a lot over the last 10 years since finishing college. My anxiety has stopped me ever getting close to people and making friendships.
The fear of disappointment and disappointing others has always been at the forefront of my mind when meeting other people and creating friendships.
I’ve only ever felt I could talk about my problems with my Mum and a couple of other close family members. But only my Mum really knows how serious the lows became.
It was partly caused by working in a dead end job full of negative people who dragged me down on a daily basis. But I took full responsibility as it was my situation to change which I’ve managed to do so. The mountains saved my life. I finally found something I love.
What do you do to keep you mental health in-check?
I don’t believe everyday is going to be sing-song and I’m not naive to that either. Getting outside in your spare time and setting myself challenges nobody thought I could achieve definitely gives me a focus through the dark days.
What makes you feel most fulfilled?
The best feeling is bringing a family member or friend to the top of one of the UK’s greatest mountains and seeing their faces light up. Making others happy makes me happy too. Also conquering hikes or mountains I never thought I’d be able to do. It shows how far I’ve come.
What is something you're looking forward to doing?
I’m on the home straight of my Munro challenge in Scotland. It’s been a tough two years but I’ve met so many fantastic people who I speak to daily.
My next challenge will be heading to Alps, Dolomites and maybe further afield. Also hopefully joining friends on the their Munro challenge as they near the end.
What advice would you give to someone struggling with their mental health?
Get outside!! You won’t miss anything in your local pub or in the club. Set yourself challenges.
Start small and finish big! And it keeps you fit!
