Dan's Story

What are some struggles you've faced with your mental health?

Sometimes, I go through phases of feeling down for no apparent reason, and it can be really frustrating. There’s nothing specific that’s causing me to feel this way, yet I can’t shake the feeling.

I think the hardest part for most people is not being able to explain why they feel the way they do.

What do you do to keep you mental health in-check?

I make an effort to carve out time for myself, and wild camping really helps with this. I find that being in nature and the outdoors is such a powerful way to recharge and heal mentally. It’s like a reset for my mind.

What makes you feel most fulfilled?

Having a loving relationship with my partner and family is really important to me, and it provides a lot of support.

Planning my next adventure or expedition also helps a lot. It’s so important to have something to look forward to—it keeps me focused and motivated.

What is something you're looking forward to doing?

I’m currently planning an expedition to ski a 200km route across Lake Inari, north of the Arctic Circle in Finland. It’s an exciting challenge, and I can’t wait to experience it. Planning for something like this really helps me stay focused and motivated.

What advice would you give to someone struggling with their mental health?

Even though it can be tough, talking to someone really does help. If that's not an option, try to get comfortable in your own company. Pick up a new hobby, spend a bit more time outside, and focus on your current goals. Just remember, there’s no pressure to complete them right away. Take your time and be kind to yourself.
