Edward's Story

What are some struggles you've faced with your mental health?

I’ve always suffered anxiety and depression from approximately my mid 20s. This took a whole new level when I left my children’s mum 11 years ago and have had a constant battle to see my two daughters, which unfortunately led to me trying to take my own life just over 3 years ago. Every day is a battle.

What do you do to keep you mental health in-check?

I have struggled to find an escape, but hiking and the great outdoors has been my life line - an escape from the daily tortures. This hobby has really helped me focus my mind by planning and organising events to bring people together.

What makes you feel most fulfilled?

I feel fulfilled by pushing myself out of my comfort zone taking on these more technical challenging mountains due to my fear of heights. It also gives me a great sense of achievement when helping others conquer their goals and fears.

What is something you're looking forward to doing?

I’m always looking forward to finding new climbs and trails to complete.

What advice would you give to someone struggling with their mental health?

I would advise anyone that is struggling to get outdoors and release those endorphins. If you are anxious about going alone then why not join a hiking group, like I did. I have made lots of new friends through hiking groups. Getting in the car and turning up at your first event is hardest part, but you won’t regret it.
