Paul's Story

What are some struggles you've faced with your mental health?

A few years ago I had to sell my house and came out of a long term relationship and felt at an extremely low point in my life. While I wouldn’t say I’ve suffered lots with mental illness I was certainly in a very dark place and some days were a struggle to even get out of bed, luckily I had a strong network of close friends and family that were able to help me through. It was around this time I discovered walking and hiking, which soon became a serious hobby.

What do you do to keep you mental health in-check?

I try to keep busy and surround myself with positive people, I started a walking challenge at the beginning of 2023 to walk 200 of the best routes in the north of England across the south Pennines, Peak District, Lake District, Lancashire, and Yorkshire Dales (have currently done 76!). I can honestly say it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. While it greatly benefits both my mental and physical health, it’s allowed me to meet so many likeminded people with a love of the great outdoors and feel part of an amazing community.

What makes you feel most fulfilled?

I think knowing my family and children are all interested in what I’m doing. Also when I post about the walks and places I’ve seen and receive lovely messages from people saying it’s inspired them to visit and given them ideas of where to go or is a walk they used to do when they were young and the photos have brought back fond memories for them. That gives me a sense of fulfilment and it’s so common within the outdoor community which is why I feel so lucky to be apart of it.

What is something you're looking forward to doing?

I have a list a mile long now! Walking has opened my eyes up to so many beautiful places and also allowed me to discover a love for photography and the natural world. After I've completed my 200 walk challenge I really want to complete a long distance trail like Hadrians Wall, The Coast to Coast or the Pennine Way. My partner is a constant ray of positivity and support and accompanies me on most of my adventures, so it does make things even more special when you both share similar interests.

What advice would you give to someone struggling with their mental health?

I'd say try not to rely on tablets and medication to keep your mental health in check, instead find a hobby whether it's the gym, sport, reading etc to keep yourself motivated. For myself I felt even turning the news on TV or logging on social media was so negative and depressing so I avoid that as much as possible. Instead, I throw myself into the fresh air and countryside to explore this unbelievably beautiful country, which im hoping to encourage my son and daughter to do once they get bitten by the hiking bug - hopefully sooner rather than later!
