Robert's Story

What are some struggles you've faced with your mental health?

Some struggles I have faced were leaving old friends behind, going solo with most stuff I do, and trying to find a circle of good people around me. My gran passed last year while I was travelling in Italy and it kinda hit me more than I thought. Even on the build up to it she wasn't in a good place. I turned back on Bein Alligin in Torridon when she was in hospital as my head went halfway up. I then left this Munro as my last munro for completion in respect for my gran.

What makes you feel most fulfilled?

Feeling most fulfilled for me is when I'm outdoors - either swinging in a hammock by a fire with my dog slowing life down, or ramping it up with the feeling of self-satisfaction of solo climbing some peaks.

What is something you're looking forward to doing?

I'm looking forward to becoming a mountain guide. Climbing some big peaks, I'm aiming to living in my van full-time and show other people the endless possibilties out there.

What advice would you give to someone struggling with their mental health?

Adivce I would give is always try have something to look forward to. It definetly helps, whether it be something small or something big. Force yourself to get outdoors in nature beside a river a loch or the sea - get the tent out wild camp.

Climbing easy hills and build up to bigger peaks to get a sense of that self satisfaction feeling and let it grow even more. Crave it. Do it solo, then connect with people. You have to build your own life experience first. You'll learn about yourself, find what makes you tick and gets you those amazing feelings. Then your circle and new friends will come naturally!
